How to Fix Keychain Errors When Logging into Telegram on macOS

2026年10月4日

When you log into Telegram on macOS and get an error related to Keychain, it is usually not a problem with your account itself, but rather the system's password storage step being blocked. The steps below walk through the common causes in order, and in most cases you can resolve it yourself.

Read the Error Message Before Doing Anything

Keychain errors show up in a few different ways: some say 「Unable to store password」, some keep asking you to re-enter your system login password, and others say a keychain item cannot be accessed. Note the keywords in the dialog first, then decide what to do next.

One thing to avoid: do not reinstall Telegram repeatedly just because of this error. Reinstalling usually does not fix keychain permissions, and it may cause you to lose your local session.

If you downloaded the macOS client from telegram.org or installed it from the App Store, both are official channels and the troubleshooting steps are the same.

Repair Telegram Entries in Keychain Access

Open the Keychain Access app (you can find it by typing Keychain Access into Spotlight search). On the left, select the 「login」 keychain, and type Telegram into the search box in the top right.

Find the entries with Telegram in the name, double-click one to open it, and check 「Show password」. You will be asked for your Mac login password. If this step itself fails, the entry is corrupted.

What to do: select these Telegram-related entries, delete them, then fully quit Telegram (menu bar Telegram → Quit, not just closing the window), reopen it, and log in again. Telegram will recreate the keychain entries.

If deleting them says you do not have permission, first confirm the current macOS user is an administrator account, then try again.

Check Whether Your System Login Password and Keychain Are in Sync

The keychain is encrypted with your Mac login password. If you recently changed your system login password but the keychain was not updated to match, you will get an error when logging into Telegram.

You can verify this: in Keychain Access, pick any entry that normally shows its password and see whether entering your current login password unlocks it. If it does not, the keychain is still using the old password.

How to fix it: open the 「Preferences」 or 「Settings」 menu in Keychain Access, find the option related to 「Reset My Default Keychain」, and follow the prompts to enter the old and new passwords so they sync up. This only affects the keychain on this Mac and does not affect your Telegram account.

When done, restart Telegram and log in again.

Alternatives If the Error Persists

If none of the above works, you can temporarily stop Telegram from relying on the keychain to store your password: quit Telegram, delete the Telegram entries in the keychain, then log in again and choose not to allow saving the password when the system asks. You will need to enter it manually each time, but you can at least use Telegram normally for now.

Also check that your system version and Telegram version are not too old: update to the current version from the App Store or telegram.org, then try again.

If the problem only happens on one Mac, logging into the same account on another device can confirm whether it is an account issue. Keychain errors are a local system-level matter and are usually unrelated to account security, so there is no need to rush into changing your Telegram password or enabling two-step verification to deal with it.
