After you open a file someone sent you in Telegram, or download a document yourself, it's often hard to tell where it ended up. The location depends on your system and which client you're using. Here's a platform-by-platform look at the default save locations, how to find files manually, and a few common pitfalls to watch out for.
Files in Telegram land on disk in one of two ways. One is when you tap an image, video, or document in a chat: the client caches it in its own app data directory so you can preview it right away, and these files usually don't show up in the system's Downloads folder. The other is when you actively tap "Save to Downloads" or "Save As," which puts the file into the system's public downloads directory. When you can't find a file, first ask yourself: did I open a preview, or did I save it? Only the latter shows up in your system's file manager. On top of that, Telegram Desktop and the mobile apps don't behave the same way by default, so you need to check each one separately.
The Android app puts auto-downloaded files in its private app directory by default, roughly under Android/data/org.telegram.messenger/files/Telegram/, split into subfolders for images, videos, documents, and so on. On Android 11 and later, a regular file manager may not be able to enter this directory directly, so you'll need the built-in Files app or granted access. If you tap "Save to Downloads" in a chat, the file goes into the public Download/Telegram directory, which any file manager can see. When searching, check the Download directory first, and only then go into the app's private directory. Some third-party Telegram clients use different folder names, so go by what you actually see.
Because of iOS sandboxing, files Telegram caches automatically don't appear in the Files app's downloads directory, and you can only view them inside the Telegram app. To actually save something to the system, tap the share button in the file preview, choose "Save to Files," and pick a location such as "On My iPhone" or iCloud Drive. Once saved, you can find it in the Files app. Photos and videos can also be saved to the system photo library and then viewed in the Photos app. If you clear the cache inside Telegram, copies you've already saved to Files or your photo library are not affected.
The Windows, macOS, and Linux desktop apps save downloaded files by default in a Telegram Desktop subfolder inside your system's Downloads folder, for example C:\Users\your-username\Downloads\Telegram Desktop on Windows. You can view or change this save path in the client's Settings. If you've checked the locations above and still can't find the file, go through these one by one: whether you tapped a preview instead of saving; whether you changed the download directory in Settings; whether the system Downloads folder has been taken over by a browser or other software; and whether the file was deleted when the cache was cleared. To avoid losing track of files in the future, the safest habit is to manually tap "Save to Downloads" or "Save As" every time you receive an important file, and remember where you chose to put it.
