What to Do When Telegram Says a Large File Exceeds the Size Limit

2026年10月4日

When you send a video or archive to a friend or group in Telegram and a message pops up saying the file exceeds the size limit, it is usually not a network problem. Instead, the current upload method or the file itself has gone past the upload cap Telegram allows. Here is how to figure out what is happening and fix it, in the order you can actually try things.

First, check which upload method triggered the limit

Telegram has two different sets of rules for upload size: the cap for a normal chat upload and the cap for saving to the cloud are not the same, and how new your client version is can also matter. First look at where the warning appeared:

1. If you tapped the attachment button in the input box of a chat with a person or a group, that is a normal upload, and the cap is relatively low. 2. If you dragged the file into Saved Messages or your own cloud, that is a cloud upload, and the cap is usually higher. 3. If the warning shows a specific number, write it down. That number is the maximum your current client allows.

Note: clients on different platforms (phone, desktop) may show different caps. Go by what your current device actually tells you, and do not copy old numbers you saw online.

Upload the file to Saved Messages or the cloud, then forward it

If only the normal chat upload is being blocked, you can take another path:

1. Open Saved Messages in Telegram and send the same file there first. 2. Once the upload finishes and the file appears in Saved Messages, press and hold or right-click the file and choose to forward it. 3. In the forward screen, pick the friend or group you want to send it to and confirm.

The reason this works is that Saved Messages uses the cloud upload channel, which accepts larger files. Once the file is already on Telegram's servers, forwarding is just a reference, so it is not uploaded again. If Saved Messages also says it is over the limit, then the file really is beyond the cap for your current account and client, and you need to move on to compressing it.

Compress or split the file, then send it

When the file itself is genuinely too large, the most direct fix is to shrink it:

1. Video: use a built-in or common video tool to lower the resolution (for example, from 4K to 1080p) or the bitrate, export it as MP4, and send that. 2. Images: choose lower quality when exporting in bulk, or pack them into an archive first and set the compression level. 3. Archives: use tools such as 7-Zip or WinRAR to create a split archive, cutting one large file into several smaller parts. Send them one by one; once the other person has them all, extracting the first part restores the original. 4. When Telegram asks whether to compress during sending, choosing compress produces a smaller version but lowers the quality; choosing send as file keeps the original quality and the same size.

Note: compressing and splitting change the form of the file. Before sending important files, make sure the other person can restore them properly.

Check the client version and account status

If you have tried all of the above and it still fails, check your environment and account:

1. Download the client for your platform from Telegram's official website, telegram.org, or update to the current version through Google Play or the App Store. Older versions may have stricter limits. 2. Make sure your account has not been restricted from uploading. For example, an account that was just registered or that has triggered risk controls may temporarily be unable to upload large files, so you can try again later. 3. Try again on a different network. Some networks interrupt large uploads, which shows up as a failure partway through rather than a size warning at the start. 4. If you installed a client from a third-party source or from this site's installer entry, compare it against the version information on telegram.org to confirm where it came from, and avoid versions of unknown origin whose features have been modified.

If you truly cannot send it, you can pass it to the other person through an external method such as cloud storage first, and switch back to Telegram once the client is updated or your account status recovers.
