After you block someone on Telegram, you may still run into their messages in certain places. That does not mean the block failed. Here is what is actually happening, based on the real interface, and what you can do about it.
Open the private chat with that person, tap their name at the top to open their profile, and find 「Block User」 to confirm it shows as blocked. You can also check 「Settings」 - 「Privacy and Security」 - 「Blocked Users」; the person should appear in that list. If they are not there, the block did not go through, so just repeat the action.
Keep in mind: blocking only affects private chats and calls. It does not delete your existing chat history, and it does not remove the person from your contacts.
The first case is shared groups. Blocking does not stop you from seeing the person speak in a group you both belong to. Group messages are visible to all members by design.
The second case is old messages. Messages the person sent before you blocked them stay in the chat, and you can scroll up to read them. Blocking does not wipe old history.
The third case is replies in channels or groups. If you both interact in the same channel comment section or group, their public posts remain visible.
The fourth case is the person contacting you from another account or an account you have not blocked. A block only applies to the specific account you blocked.
The fifth case is leftover notifications. Notifications that were already pushed right before the block may still sit in your notification shade, and tapping them will jump to the old message.
If you do not want to see the person in a shared group: you can mute that group, or block the person individually from the member list, but public group messages cannot be hidden from you alone.
If you do not want to keep old messages: long-press a single message in the private chat and delete it, or clear the entire chat history. Deleting only affects your own devices; it does not delete anything on the other person's side.
If the person keeps contacting you from a new account: block the new account as well, and in 「Privacy and Security」 set 「Who Can Message Me」 to 「My Contacts」 to reduce direct messages from strangers.
If you do not want a blocked person to see your online status or profile photo: adjust the visibility of 「Last Seen」, 「Profile Photo」, and 「Read Receipts」 on the same privacy settings page.
After you block someone, messages they send you will show as failed or with a single check mark, and they usually cannot tell whether you are online. If you unblock them, they can message you again, but the previous conversation state is not restored automatically.
Blocking is not the same as reporting. If the person is harassing you or running a scam, choose 「Report」 on their profile so Telegram can handle it, rather than just blocking them.
