Many people see a 「Clear Cache」 option in Telegram for Android settings and worry that tapping it will wipe out all the photos and videos they received in chats. This article focuses on one thing: what clearing the cache actually affects, whether your local files will be lost, and how to check and back up before you clear it.
The 「Clear Cache」 feature in Telegram for Android removes temporary files the app stores to speed up loading, such as thumbnails of images you have opened, video segments you have played, and temporary copies of avatars and stickers. It does not delete chat history itself, nor does it delete files you have manually saved to your phone gallery.
Chat history is stored on Telegram servers and in the local database, managed separately from the cache. So under normal circumstances, clearing the cache will not make your chat list disappear or delete messages in conversations. What you actually need to worry about is a different category of files: photos and videos that exist only in the Telegram cache and that you have never tapped 「Save to Gallery」 for.
Open Telegram for Android, go to 「Settings」→「Data and Storage」→「Storage Usage」, and you will see cache usage broken down by category, such as photos, videos, files, and music. What is listed here is the media in the cache.
If you clear the cache, these media items will still appear as messages in the chat, but tapping them will require re-downloading from the server. In other words: the messages remain, the media files themselves are cleared, and you need an internet connection to fetch them again. If you previously saved them manually to your phone gallery, that copy in the gallery is unaffected and stays there.
There is another scenario: some media that has expired or was deleted by the sender may no longer exist on the server. Once the cache is cleared, such content cannot be downloaded again. So before clearing the cache, it is best to first check whether any chats contain media you still need but have not saved.
Step one: on the 「Storage Usage」 page, sort by size and see which chats take up the most. Step two: enter those chats, long-press the photos or videos you want to keep, and choose 「Save to Gallery」 or 「Forward to Saved Messages」. Once saved to the gallery, the file is no longer part of the Telegram cache, and clearing the cache will not affect it.
Step three: if you use the built-in gallery on Android, make sure the Telegram save directory has not been accidentally removed by the system cleanup tool. The default save path for Telegram is usually under the Telegram folder in internal storage, which you can verify in a file manager.
Step four: if you just want to save space, you do not have to clear everything at once. In 「Storage Usage」, you can clear by time, for example only clearing cache older than one month, so recently used media stays and important content is less likely to be deleted by mistake.
After clearing the cache, if a photo keeps spinning when you tap it, first check whether your network is working. Telegram needs an internet connection to re-download that media from the server. If the network is fine but it still won't open, the media may have been removed from the server, or the sender may have recalled the message.
Also, check Telegram's auto-download settings. Under 「Settings」→「Data and Storage」→「Auto-Download Media」, make sure photos and videos are allowed to download automatically over Wi-Fi or mobile data. That way, after clearing the cache, they will be restored automatically as you browse chats, without tapping each one manually.
A final reminder: clearing the cache is a safe, routine operation and will not delete chat history. But if you treat unsaved media as permanent files, you may need to re-download them after clearing, and a few expired items cannot be recovered. Make a habit of saving important photos and videos to your gallery or Saved Messages, and you will not need to worry about clearing the cache.
